travellers-cashcardCurrency Cards are a relatively new entrant to the foreign exchange market, having only becoming a wider replacement for travellers cheques in 2008/09. There are numerous providers who have branded cards, and this has lead to a relatively competitive marketplace, with providers using a variety of offers to win customers. From the consumers perspective this is fantastic news as it means that the offers available are very strong!
FX cards work in a very similar way to a pay-as-you go mobile phone, where you would have a card number which you would top up directly from your bank account when you require funds to be available.
These cards offer security, convenience and value as they are protected by the requirement of a pin number. You can top them up either on-line or over the phone depending on the provider.
The major benefit for FX cards is that you will generally not incur the charges that consumers often suffer on their bank debit and credit cards, plus the exchange rates offered are extremely competitive, this rate is generally fixed which means that you can work out the cost of purchases very easily. In addition many of the providers will replace the card and the money contained on it if it is lost or stolen, this is a clear advantage over carrying cash abroad!
